http://meta.stackexchange.com/questions/4896/trackbacks-to-mathoverflow-on-the-arxivTrackbacks to MathOverflow on the arXivJosé Figueroa-O'Farrill2010-03-11T12:17:29Z2010-03-20T19:33:55Z

Many of the answers/comments to questions in MathOverflow contain links to eprints from arXiv. The arXiv accepts trackbacks from a white list of sites (and we're pretty confident that MO would make it into the white list). I was wondering whether this feature could be implemented. The idea would be that every link to an arXiv preprint automatically generates a trackback. For example, if one is linking to http://arxiv.org/abs/1003.2173 or http://arxiv.org/pdf/1003.2173 would generate a trackback to http://arxiv.org/trackback/1003.2173. In this way someone browsing the arXiv who comes to a page of an eprint which has been discussed on MO would be able to see a link to the relevant MO content, as it happens already for the "whitelisted" blogs that arXiv allows trackbacks from.

http://meta.stackexchange.com/questions/5005/2-in-markdown-turns-into-1"2." in markdown turns into "1."Tomasz P. Szynalski2010-03-20T10:34:45Z2010-03-20T18:47:26Z

When you type "1.", "2.", etc. in the editor, it creates a numbered list. But it always
creates a list that starts from 1, no matter what number you type.

So, when you type:

> 1. Item number one.
Commenting on item number one.
> 2. Item number two.
Commenting on item number two.

You get this:

Item number one.

Commenting on item number one.

Item number two.

Commenting on item number two.

Here is a real-life example of this bug. What the code should do instead is use the start attribute of the
tag, e.g. for the second item it should generate
.

It is simply not a good user experience if the user types "2." and gets "1." instead.

http://meta.stackexchange.com/questions/5009/allow-u-tag-in-editorAllow tag in editorTomasz P. Szynalski2010-03-20T14:01:46Z2010-03-20T18:23:06Z

The editor already allows , and <s> (strikethrough). Why not (underline)?

I don't know about other StackExchanges, but on my site (language questions) it is often useful to underline part of a word to indicate stress, mark some sound or syllable, etc. Boldface/italics are not always enough.

For example, suppose I want to draw your attention to the vowel in the word "five". As you can see, boldface is not very readable, neither is italic script ("five").

I don't see any good reason to exclude . The fact that someone might confuse it with a hyperlink is not a good enough reason. First, links are a different color. Second, how real is the possibility of confusion and what's the worst that could happen? I use underlines on my site occasionally (e.g. in the chart here) and there are situations where they are the best option.

All I ask is for someone to remove from the list of disallowed tags.

This question asks to implement the recent change to change the value of question votes, while I disagree with implementing that change on Stack Exchange sites, I would like to see the other recent announcement implemented.

Please note that we have fixed a few long standing bugs with reputation in this new calculation:

accepted answers and bounties were only partially immune to the rep cap before depending on the time of day you earned them, but they are fully immune now.

upvotes can now "replace" missing rep lost to downvotes, up to the +200 daily cap

This change simplifies the rep cap processing, so that you can earn 200/day from upvotes, and get your accepted answer reputation on top.

Note it is unlikely to make a huge difference on most SE sites right now, but it is a much more transparent calculation when trying to establish eligibility for
Mortarboard
,
Epic
, and
Legendary
badges.

http://meta.stackexchange.com/questions/4997/reputation-rule-changesReputation Rule ChangesRandell2010-03-19T14:29:19Z2010-03-20T18:00:06Z

From the latest SO blog post, Jeff mentioned that there will be several reputation rule changes, which are the following:

question upvotes will now grant only +5 rep instead of +10

after casting 300 votes, you cannot downvote non community wiki posts at more than a 2:1 ratio

every user will (eventually) get a full reputation recalc

Since StackExchange sites, especially the one we're running, has pretty much the same principles with regards to reputation, I'd like to request those features implemented in SE sites as well.

http://meta.stackexchange.com/questions/5011/feature-request-automatically-display-the-welcome-box-only-on-the-landing-page-fFeature request: Automatically display the Welcome box ONLY on the landing page for unregistered usersDan Dumitru2010-03-20T15:51:17Z2010-03-20T17:41:07Z

I'm talking about the sidebar Welcome box, that is always displayed for unregistered users.

Currently, even after they browse around the site for some time, they still see that box, both on the homepage and on the question pages.

I think the box is useful when the user first comes to the site (on the very first page he sees, like the 'Welcome' announcement) and then it can even show up on the Homepage until he registers BUT, after the first pageview, he shouldn't see that box on the question pages.

It is just wasting page space.

And unregistered users make a big percent of the traffic for a SE site, so it is kind of important how they see the pages.

I haven't seen any equivalent to the list of StackExchange sites for those sites using twitter. So here's a question, have you got a twitter account for your SE site? if so add it here.

I've created a list of the sites I know of that are using Twitter so I can follow them. I'd like to add some more...

If you have a twitter account for your site please edit the answer below. If you don't have enough reputation to do so, add another answer.

Are you looking to Auto-Post new questions to Twitter? So far I've found two methods (please fill in more as you come across them). In both cases I've used the RSS available at http://www.yoursite.ext/feeds/)

RSS2Twitter.com - Site reads in your feed and posts to twitter - admin interface on the site is very slow butit does what it says it does - your feed can be read every 30mins (at best). Stats are kept on the clicks people make on your post but the numbers appear to be heavily inflated - for instance I have one tweet that supposedly had over 30 clicks even though SE itself told me I had onlyu 2 views of the article.

HootSuite.com - a full-featured, multi-twitter admin allowing you to administrate mutliple twitter accounts together. RSS feeds can be read and updated every hour at best. The stats seem real and can partially identify where the click came from - for instance my twitter account cross-posts to facebook so hootsuite shows me how many clicks came from each system.

http://meta.stackexchange.com/questions/3916/strip-spaces-from-tags-in-gettagsselectorStrip spaces from tags in getTagsSelectorCorey Frang2010-01-23T00:45:38Z2010-03-20T03:22:14Z

I've implemented some custom stuff in my JavaScript which will add images to certain tags... These tags now return " tagname" for .text(). This causes problems with the "interested/ignored" tags being highlighted properly. I have taken the time to rewrite the
getTagsSelector
function to optimize it a bit, and strip any whitespace. If you wouldn't mind implementing it at some point in the future that would be very handy for me. This function currently exists on line 238 of master.js.

function getTagsSelector(jPrefs) {
var replacements = {
'#': 'JJJ',
'+': 'XXX',
'.': 'ZZZ'
};
// jPrefs is a jQuery set
return jPrefs.map(function() {
var tag = $(this).text().replace(/(\s+|\xa0|#|\+|\.)/g, function(match) {
if (replacements.hasOwnProperty(match)) return replacements[match];
return '';
});
if (tag.indexOf('*')>-1) {
return "div.tags:regex(class,t-"+tag.replace(/\*/g, ".*")+")";
}
return "div.t-"+tag;
}).get().join(",");
}

According to the Stack Exchange directory, page views on Home4Film have dropped 19% this week compared to last. Whereas according to my Google Analytics stats the views are essentially flat (down 0.66%).

Looking at the usage page in the admin console, I see two days with a giant spike in pageviews, which I don't see on Analytics. This leads me to infer the directory numbers are including hits from crawlers. Is this the case? If so should it be?

I just signed up as a new user to rooted.stackexchange.com. When I logged in with my openID I saw the new user welcome message in the notify-bar (which is a nice touch by the way):

Welcome to rooted! Visit your user page to fill out your profile.

I dutifully clicked the link to enter my details, but the notify-bar remained. I filled out my details and submitted the changes and yet the notify-bar, still it was there.

This seems to be a bug to me, the notify-bar should be dismissed once the link has been clicked, and certainly dismissed once the details have been populated and the form submitted.

http://meta.stackexchange.com/questions/512/how-do-i-entice-people-to-participate-on-my-se-siteHow do I entice people to participate on my SE site?Anton Geraschenko2009-09-22T20:20:53Z2010-03-19T14:05:41Z

I have a sign-up form for people who would like to be notified once my SE site is up, but I haven't been advertising it much because it feels silly to push people to sign up for something that doesn't exist yet. I think it's better to wait until I have something real to point them to.

I can think of a few dozen people who are exactly my target audience. Once the site is up, I'd like to get these people to be part of the community. I know all of them (to varying degrees), so I plan to send them personal emails. But I realise that there is a non-trivial barrier to entry on an SE site. If I just point people to the site, they're likely to look at it, but not participate. On the other hand, if I can get them to ask a question, then pretty soon they'll earn some rep and get a badge or two, and then be much more likely to actually participate. So my plan is to write emails that go something like this:

Hi NAME,

Remember that time we talked about X,
Y, and Z? Well, I've just launched a
Q&A site to try to collect musings and
insights just like those. I know you
think about lots of interesting little
questions. If you have a few minutes,
try asking one of them on the site. It
can even be a question you already
know the answer to, so long as you
think other mathematicians will find
it interesting. I'd really appreciate
your feedback on the user interface
(or any other aspects of the site).

Thanks,
Anton

Do you have any other ideas for how to lure people into engaging with the site? Any advice on what to emphasize in my emails (or what wording to use) to make it more likely that people will actually ask a question?

Using the data dump, I can easily find a set of users that used the site (one even had rep over 1000), but haven't logged in for over 2-3 months. My site has probably grown X100 in size since then.

How horrible is it of me to email these users saying "We've grown, please check us out again"? It feels spammish, but perhaps as a one time thing it's acceptable?

At least, I'll ensure I don't ever email the same user twice ... I really don't want to bug them.

When merging users, assuming both user accounts have an OpenID, it would be nice if the system copied the source user's OpenID into the "Alternate OpenID" field of the destination ("master") user. Otherwise that OpenID is lost forever. Right now I'm copying it manually.
