I saw this question, but it's hardly for dummies. Let's say I'd like to register a domain with GoDaddy (or whatever other alternative) and work from there. Can someone point out how to do this, and connect that domain with the SE engine?

I still can't solve the problem and the answers to questions out there are way too complicated.

Need someone from FogCreek to confirm how to set this up (and if users still can't point their domain to [x].stackexchange.com, then help out fixing the problem).

Here is what you do.

Register that domain name

Get into the DNS settings for that domain.

For GoDaddy go to manage my domains, click on the domain name you have registered, scroll down to total dns control and click on the total dns control link

Now you need to change the ARecord

For GoDaddy click edit, next to it and enter 64.34.80.165 as the ARecord value/ip.

Then you need to setup the www redirect.

Scroll down to CNames and check for WWW record, if it exists edit the value, if it doesn't, click add a new cname record

Make the WWW cname record be: lbny-se.fogcreek.com

Now you are done with the registrar, and it's time to setup your stackexchange settings.

Log in as an admin, and add www.site.com and site.com as aliases

Once the redirect is active(going to site.com shows up your site), change the primary domain to the domain name you want to use as primary.(http://site.com or http://www.site.com

Don't worry if your domain isn't working right away, it can take a couple of hours for the dns to go out into the world.

Also some times your browser maybe using a cached version of the dns, and you may not see the redirect, when it's working. So go to a proxy and enter your site using one of those to check.
