What is meta? ×
Meta Stack Exchange is where users like you discuss bugs, features, and support issues that affect the software powering all 129 Stack Exchange communities.

We've already got several new tags that have cropped up. Let's pick one and go with it. I think the term (taken from Introduce sub-communities (or “Portals”) to prevent fragmentation) sounds the best. It seems to reflect the fact that it's just a subset of Stack Overflow, while "mini-site" feels like an unconnected entity, at least to me. If you have other ideas, suggest them below, or perhaps someone from the team will declare a preferred term. Either way, let's come to a consensus before everyone goes off in different directions.

should then be made a synonym of it, and a couple things in would need to be retagged.

There's also a lot of people using without any of the previously mentioned tags, so some organizing may be necessary there as well.

I created the tag mini-site since that was the term used in the blog post, but I don't really have a preference. Either is fine. –  hammar Aug 24 '11 at 23:11

The internal name is sub-site. Then again, people make up names for other things all the time... –  Kevin Montrose Aug 25 '11 at 0:13

@Kevin: Now that you mention it, StackExchange™ Unautonomous PseudoSite™ does have a ring to it... –  hammar Aug 25 '11 at 1:28

I like , but we should probably have the Team weigh in on it, since they'll be using it 'outside' the network, so they'll probably have an official name for it (which as hammar points out may be since it was mentioned in the blog).
