What is meta? ×
Meta Stack Exchange is where users like you discuss bugs, features, and support issues that affect the software powering all 127 Stack Exchange communities.

The answers.onstartups.com URL isn't working for me, I get a page saying "Portal not found" at http://answers.onstartups.com/ (The page source is simply Portal not found).

All other stackexchange sites seem to be fine, even http://meta.answers.onstartups.com/ works fine (but I can't log in there, I get the same error page).

Seems to be a localised problem: works fine from a different location, doesn't work from 212.110.185.142.

Safari Version 5.1.2 (6534.52.7), OS X 10.6.8

Works for me. Check again (it might have been a temporary snafu). –  Yannis Jan 22 '12 at 11:24

Still broken for me. Could this somehow be my problem? –  James Jan 22 '12 at 11:24

Ah. Looks like a localised problem. If I route traffic through a remote university server it works fine, but it's broken if I connect from 212.110.185.142. –  James Jan 22 '12 at 11:27

I don't know. I'm guessing it's not a browser problem, but it could be something awry with the network on your end. Anyways the devs will see this soon, and you'll get a more educated answer. Can you post a screenshot of the "portal not found" page? Is it a Stack Exchange error, or a browser error page? –  Yannis Jan 22 '12 at 11:27

@Yannis it's literally a page with the source "Portal not found" I don't think it's a browser error. –  James Jan 22 '12 at 11:29

Cool. Still add any relevant info to the question, so we can refer to it if someone else experiences the same problem. (as comments tend to go away...) –  Yannis Jan 22 '12 at 11:30

Problem now seems to be resolved. –  James Jan 22 '12 at 13:50

I've visited answers.onstartups.com just about every day for almost two years now, and have never had this problem. However, some of our users seem to have this problem quite frequently. It seems to be an intermittent problem that eventually works itself out.

It appears to be a DNS problem, but SE doesn't own onstartups.com, which makes it a bit complicated.

also asked on meta.answers.onstartups.com/questions/693/… -- let's keep it there for now, since the question is indeed specific to this one site and its weird special DNS rules. –  Jeff Atwood Jan 23 '12 at 17:43

well, it's down again and.. because of that, the meta post is also not available /cc @JeffAtwood –  Sathya Jan 24 '12 at 8:21

@Sathya Kyle answered definitively there; the DNS owner (not us, which is the root of this problem) changed DNS and accidentally made some kind of mistake, which is the cause of this outage. They are fixing it now. –  Jeff Atwood Jan 24 '12 at 17:43
