What is meta? ×
Meta Stack Exchange is where users like you discuss bugs, features, and support issues that affect the software powering all 131 Stack Exchange communities.

I'm posting this here because I was directed to from the Feedback link at the bottom of the email I received this morning. The email said that the Running proposal on Area 51 was merged into Sports.

Hello,

We're writing because you have been a supporter of the Area 51 proposal Running.

We believe this proposal, as stated, is a subset of another proposal per the following guidelines:

Almost all X questions are on-topic for site Y If Y already exists, it already has a tag for X, and nobody is complaining You're not creating such a big group that you don't have enough experts to answer all possible questions There's a high probability that users of site Y would enjoy seeing the occasional question about X For more background, read merging season.

After some community discussion on Area 51, we have elected to merge this proposal with another Area 51 Proposal, Sports.

If you were committed to this proposal, your commitment has been transferred to Sports, in the hopes that a slightly broader site proposal will have a better chance of succeeding. We hope that you will continue to support the merged proposals.

As always, thank you for participating on Area 51!

Yours,

The Stack Exchange Team

Please understand there is a huge difference between sports and fitness. Moreover, there is a huge difference between being a fan and being a participant. Similarly, there is a difference between being a developer and a super user, and therefore there are different sites catering to those categories.

It would have been more appropriate to merge this proposal--if it had to be merged--into the Fitness & Nutrition site.

Fitness & Nutrition is already in Public Beta (for nearly a year) so it wouldn't make sense to merge it to that. –  Some Helpful Commenter Feb 6 '12 at 18:38

I understand. I meant "merge" in an abstract sense, not an actual trademarked command or button that the Area51 admins push. –  alord1689 Feb 6 '12 at 19:14

Agreed with Conrad, simply use the Fitness site if you wish, they already have lots of running questions from what I've seen. Likely they didn't feel that the Running site could ever gain critical mass independent of any other related areas. Developing software is entirely different from using software, I don't agree that hardcore runners and amateur runners are similarly distinct. –  Matthew Read Feb 6 '12 at 19:14

I agree that elite runners and amateurs share a lot of commonality, and the amateurs would love to learn from the elites. The comment about fan vs. participant was in reference to the impropriety of merging Running into Sports, as Sports seems more suited to fans than participants, whereas a Running site would be geared to participants (hence... Instead of "merging" our "commitments" into Sports, they should just tell us no and to go to F&N). –  alord1689 Feb 6 '12 at 19:23

Questions about Area 51, and specific to Area 51, should be asked on discussion.area51.stackexchange.com. Meta Stack Overflow is not anymore reported to be the meta site for Area 51. –  kiamlaluno Feb 6 '12 at 21:14
