What is meta? ×
Meta Stack Exchange is where users like you discuss bugs, features, and support issues that affect the software powering all 131 Stack Exchange communities.

has about 180 questions.

Of these, about 100 are also tagged . Questions with both tags are almost always about the JDK, with a handful discussing certification (usually in a way that should earn a Not Constructive close vote).

The remaining 80 have very little in common, covering topics ranging from SunOS (Solaris) to SPARC hardware to various products that Sun Microsystems has produced over the years that they've prefixed their name to.

It seems to me that itself may not have a reason to exist. Sun is was a company, not a product or service. Unlike other company names, there is no case with Sun where people discuss the company name when they mean a specific product instead.

Unless someone has some reservations, I'm going to begin adjusting the tagging on these questions later this week.

This seems reasonable to me. –  Olivier Jacot-Descombes Feb 26 '12 at 22:41
The only association I can think of would be a Sun SPARC system. I think I've heard those referred to as a "Sun" box or server before. But I agree that's very specific and should be sun-sparc or sparc instead. –  darvids0n Feb 26 '12 at 23:18
Indeed, there's a sparc tag already. –  Charles Feb 26 '12 at 23:46

I've gone and retagged some questions where should obviously have been a specific Sun technology (, , , , , etc.)… or or ! I've left questions intact when they already had the more specific tag in addition to .

There are 29 questions left in [sun] -[java] -[jvm] -[sparc] -[weblogic] -[solaris] -[astronomy]. The ones that have one of these tags should still be fine if the tag goes away. Only a few of the ones where the may not be redundant reference Sun as a company, and I think they all should be closed:

I think we can finish closing these, retag the rest properly, and then invoke Trogdor.
