Lines like

Won't be displayed in the editor if they come after a bullet list item, only with the `inline code` syntax. Example (see source to verify):

  • list item

If I try to escape the ! the lines are displayed but not formatted with code style:

Also, the doctype string cannot be entered as non-code, unless the ! is escaped. See to source to verify that I inserted the same text in the parenthesis (). This latter one might be by design though, possibly to prevent arbitrary HTML.

This question has been asked before and already has an answer. If those answers do not fully address your question, please ask a new question.

This has nothing to do with the doctype, and everything to do with code block syntax. – BoltClock's a Unicorn Mar 26 '12 at 15:26
As a workaround you can place a dummy HTML comment above your codeblock - <!-- foo --> - like this – Lix Mar 26 '12 at 15:26
Hard to tell which one it is. Could be either one, but this is by design regardless. – BoltClock's a Unicorn Mar 26 '12 at 15:29
Care to explain a little more? I think the list item should not take over the next block. Also, what about the second part? – Tamás Szelei Mar 26 '12 at 15:41
The second part, about it not showing up unless you escape? Yeah that's by design for the reason you state. – BoltClock's a Unicorn Mar 26 '12 at 15:43
Yes. Fair enough, thanks. – Tamás Szelei Mar 26 '12 at 16:29
Definitely indent by 8 spaces when your code is part of a bulleted list. Forget those ugly hack workarounds, like inserting a dummy character. – Cody Gray Mar 26 '12 at 16:54
