I suggest merging the (11 questions) into the tag (and deleting ); is intended for the device independent format created by TeX, but has recently only been used for the digital visual interface. There are currently eleven questions tagged with of which six are for the digital visual interface.

And we now have tex.sx, so any questions for the device independent format should probably be asked there anyway.

If the tag is not useful, why not just remove it? There are only 9 questions with it right now, and all the (relevant) ones already have other relevant tags. (I'm not sure if it is useful or not though, not my domain at all.) –  Mat Apr 3 '12 at 17:01

@Mat: Merging dvi into tex would remove dvi, wouldn't it? –  Martin Schröder Apr 3 '12 at 19:28

Yes, but that requires a mod. Deleting can be done by pretty much anyone. –  Mat Apr 3 '12 at 19:30

@Mat: Well, I can't delete a tag. And I see only retaging on the privileges pages. –  Martin Schröder Apr 3 '12 at 19:37

Once a tag has no attached questions, it gets automatically deleted (takes ~24h). Once that's done, new users can't tag their questions with it. (Of course, someone with sufficient rep can go and re-create it, and if that happens, well back to square one and you need a mod (or dev) to make it really permanent.) Just 9 tagged questions in 3 years is very low volume. Simply removing it (if it doesn't add value) should be enough for now. –  Mat Apr 3 '12 at 19:39

@Mat: I've suggested the removal of the dvi tag on all 5 questions. –  Martin Schröder Apr 3 '12 at 20:49

I don't think removing this tag is a good solution - rejecting the edits! –  Tomas Apr 3 '12 at 20:54

@Tomas: You want a tag for five questions? –  Martin Schröder Apr 3 '12 at 22:55

1 Answer 1

If the tag is used for 2 different purposes, then the only solution would be to disambiguate it to two tags, and .

If you just remove the tag from tex questions, hoping that people will use it only for digital visual interface, that will simply not work. People will continue to confuse it and use for both purposes.

We have five questions with this tag, and tex.sx exists. –  Martin Schröder Apr 3 '12 at 22:55

@Martin, I don't see any point in removing a tag that has 5 questions. Think about the logic - if these questions are related to [dvi], then the tag should be present, regardless of how many other questions are there! It doesn't make sense to remove it. You may migrate all the questions to text.SE if you think, and the tag will be deleted automatically. –  Tomas Apr 17 '12 at 12:08

I'll try, but I doubt that questions from 2008 will be migrated. –  Martin Schröder Apr 17 '12 at 19:33

Old questions are not migrated. And I can't remove the tag (see above). –  Martin Schröder Apr 18 '12 at 14:00

Well, there is now a dvi-tex tag with the four questions that were related to the file format (Tag wiki to be approved). –  madth3 Jan 31 '13 at 18:14
