I've just set up a new site (call it foobar.stackexchange.com), before I realised that foobar.com was taken.

I can obviously set up another domain (fizzbuzz.com) and set up an alias, but would this cause any problems or confusion to users? Is foobar.stackexchange.com even visible to search engines once an alias is set up, or would all traffic go through fizzbuzz.com?

If you set up example.com to point to your foobar.stackexchange.com it shouldn't be a problem if they fix up the OpenID redirect issue.

But setting up a domain name that's not the same slug as the subdomain as the SE isn't much of a hassle.

It's actually a good idea to use a "brand" domain i.e. a cute, memorable domain name but a generic subdomain that forwards to it because, without doubt, people are going to try exploring the SE universe by trying random subdomains such as money, cars, books, weather etc.

Therefore, having your subdomain be the same as your domain is a wasted opportunity to catch those subdomain surfers.
