What is meta? ×
Meta Stack Exchange is where users like you discuss bugs, features, and support issues that affect the software powering all 122 Stack Exchange communities.

On meta.tex.sx, I tried to edit the tags of Text building blocks. This is the situation before my edit:

Just the tag "discussion"

I edited the tags and wanted to submit the edit, but I got this error message:

the moderator tag 'featured' must be present

That question was tagged "featured" thrice (1, 2, 3), but it wasn't anymore before my edit.

Well, interestingly, if I add the tag "featured", I can edit the question, although I'm not a mod nor a 10k user on tex.sx and shouldn't be able to use this tag, no matter if it's been on a question before or not.

question tagged with "featured"

Are these phenomena bugs or do I just not understand the system?

Okay, things are getting even weirder: If I now look at the version before my edit, it is tagged "featured", but as my first screen shot shows, it actually wasn't. So later edits change earlier edits? Shouldn't be the case, imho.

The [featured] tag automatically expires. That is:

[...] no revision is created when the featured tag is removed from a question after 30 days.

[...]

Thus, when you edit the revision, the tag is still there -- although it does not exist on the current view of the post. So in order to get it to appear, you'll need to make some other change to the tags.

And indeed your non-moderator edit made that question to be featured on the main site again:

Featured sidebar on TeX homepage

That needs some fine tuning, it seems!

Questions shown in the side bar of the main site don't actually have to be tagged featured. The question in discussion is the only one tagged so, the other questions are shown nonetheless. –  doncherry Apr 7 '12 at 18:02

True, @doncherry: if there are not enough featured questions, then FAQs are shown. Or, maybe that only applies to Meta Stack Overflow, as right now TeX only shows two, and that 2nd post is neither featured nor FAQ.‌.. –  Arjan Apr 7 '12 at 18:05

@doncherry It actually selects non closed, non locked meta posts above a certain basic popularity threshold at random. Otherwise it gets boring because you're showing the same thing over and over. –  Jeff Atwood Apr 7 '12 at 21:08

@JeffAtwood: Thanks for clarifying, I was expecting something along those lines. Do you know why the tagging I described works so strangely? –  doncherry Apr 7 '12 at 21:23

@don it's because we remove the tag from the rendered version but we don't remove it from the formal revision history –  Jeff Atwood Apr 8 '12 at 19:58
