Meta Stack Exchange is where users like you discuss bugs, features, and support issues that affect the software powering all 158 Stack Exchange communities.

What is meta?
Here's how it works:
  1. Any Stack Exchange user can ask a question
  2. The community provides support, votes on ideas, and reports bugs
  3. Your voice helps shape the way Stack Exchange operates

I tried to edit a post and before the whole page had loaded I clicked within the post body and started typing away.

Once the page had fully loaded the cursor jumped to the title textbox and I accidentally replaced the title with what I was typing.

Can the focus only be changed to the title if it isn't anywhere else (i.e. in the post content editor box)?

I agree. I've made the title go boom too many times. Note that I prefer this for only editing. Titles are the first thing you should add while creating a post, due to the dupechecker. – Manishearth Apr 24 '12 at 11:42
