The tag has 222 questions in it. Browsing through the descriptions in its list, it appears that most of the questions actually refer to , but were probably tagged that way because they are using Google Maps on Android, and thus the person typed in "android" and came to "android-maps" which seems... incorrect.

Is there any real difference between these two? Should they be merged or does need some serious cleaning?

From what I've found looks like the Android Maps is whole development package, kind of external library. Personally I would leave them separated and keep an eye to fix the tags when misused. –  Shadow Wizard May 13 '12 at 6:41
