Meta Stack Exchange is where users like you discuss bugs, features, and support issues that affect the software powering all 131 Stack Exchange communities.

I am looking for a solution that would allow me to generate some nice PNG charts using data obtained from Stack Exchange Data Explorer.

It would be perfect if there were a Python solution but I am open to other languages as long I can easily regenerate the images.

Workflow:

  1. You generate a query on http://data.stackexchange.com
  2. You write the script that downloads a CSV (or more) and generates the PNG image, allowing you to process the data from inside the script, for example you may want to ignore the first and last record from the statistics if they represent incomplete periods of time.
  3. After a time you can add this to a cron job to run a specific periods of time and update your directory with PNG reports.

For a change, this looks like it belongs on Stack Overflow... –  Oded Jun 26 '12 at 19:41

If this ends up on SO I'm closing it immediately, then coming after @Oded with a baseball bat. –  Won't Jun 26 '12 at 19:47

Heh, this question is a bit of a gray area, no? It does fit with the Stack Overflow way of doing things, but it is also ABOUT Stack Overflow and Stack Exchange... –  saluce Jun 26 '12 at 19:57

@Oded, Won't should should just ... instead of wasting time on things that are destructive ;) –  sorin Jun 26 '12 at 20:02

I'd reopen this question, because it is on-topic here (MSO is SEDE's meta), but only to close it as “not a real question”. You don't say what you are charting! How do you go from the data to the image? –  Gilles Jun 26 '12 at 20:57

This is the question: how do I generate a graph from the CSV file? I dont want to spend time updating a spreadsheet manually, so I am looking to write a script that can be run to regenerate the graph whenever I want or need. –  sorin Jun 26 '12 at 21:11

@SorinSbarnea: You just didn't tell a freaking SO Moderator aka as a monkey with guns to kiss your backside, did you? This question does not belong on MSO as it does not belong on SO, because it is not a question and not easily answerable. The answer would be "Well, it depends...what data scrapper, visualizer and image library would you like to use on what Operating System?". –  Time Traveling Bobby Jun 27 '12 at 7:58
