What is meta? ×
Meta Stack Exchange is where users like you discuss bugs, features, and support issues that affect the software powering all 131 Stack Exchange communities.

The tag can refer to either or . It is currently proposed as a synonym for the former (data clustering).

The problem is that, as of now, a large number of questions are tagged "cluster" (close to 400), most of them actually refer to computer clusters. To make things worse, these two topics are not always mutually exclusive; think of scaling cluster-analysis algorithms in a cluster of computers environment.

I propose a group effort to fix/cleanup this mess... We have two choices:

  • black-list "cluster" tag and assign all those questions as one of the two choices, or
  • only re-tag the subsets of questions referring to "cluster-analysis", and let all others be merged with "cluster-computing" using synonym tags.

EDIT:

I have gone through the entire list of "cluster" questions, and re-tagged as "cluster-analysis" where appropriate. Now almost all of what remains refers to "cluster-computing".

So does that mean I can rename [cluster] to [cluster-computing], and synonymize [cluster] to it? –  Robert Harvey Jul 2 '12 at 16:21

@RobertHarvey: yes, you can make [cluster] a synonym for [cluster-computing] –  Amro Jul 2 '12 at 16:25

[clusters] still needs a bit of work before it is synonymized to [cluster-computing]. Thanks for your help so far. –  Robert Harvey Jul 2 '12 at 16:32

@RobertHarvey: done :) –  Amro Jul 2 '12 at 17:15

some other synonyms you might want to create: [clustered] and [clustered-indexing] --> [clustered-index], [nonclustered] and [nonclustered-index] --> [non-clustered-index] –  Amro Jul 3 '12 at 19:14
