Meta Stack Exchange is where users like you discuss bugs, features, and support issues that affect the software powering all 158 Stack Exchange communities.

What is meta?
Here's how it works:
  1. Any Stack Exchange user can ask a question
  2. The community provides support, votes on ideas, and reports bugs
  3. Your voice helps shape the way Stack Exchange operates

Possible Duplicate:
Advertising Open Source Project

Given your user base, is there any kind of protocol at all for making some sort of announcement regarding an opensource project without the post being flagged as offtopic?

There probably isn't (being a questions site), but on the offchance I thought I would raise the issue. It seems some sort of way of doing this would add value for users who have strong interests relating to particular tags and subjects.

This question has been asked before and already has an answer. If those answers do not fully address your question, please ask a new question.

IMHO this is what blogs, twitter etc. are for. – Aaron Bertrand Sep 5 '12 at 14:33
I know it is very tempting to advertise (sorry, "announce") things to a huge user base, but that is not what these sites are for. – dasblinkenlight Sep 5 '12 at 14:37
A preemptive comment for you - downvotes are slightly different on meta – Lix Sep 5 '12 at 14:37
@UnicornifiedBobby: did you read that "possible duplicate"? That's completely unrelated to the current question. – BalusC Sep 5 '12 at 14:39
@Chichiray: Why does a question have to change on the last sentence...OH THE ANGER! – Time Traveling Bobby Sep 5 '12 at 14:45
May I suggest this instead: Open Source Advertising - Sidebar - 2012 – Time Traveling Bobby Sep 5 '12 at 14:47
Can I make this point. The evil of advertising and the reason why corporations want to keep repeating the same advert over and over again to the public, is it is a very subtle form of brainwashing. (If you brainwash somebody they are quite naturally going to start feeling distressed, and we don't need bullies like that in our society.) A 'user managed announcement board' (now that's an original concept :) at least does not have to worry about distressing people by brainwashing them. – user1351235 Sep 5 '12 at 14:52
@user1351235: SO is a Q&A site, not a "user managed announcement board". If you want to create something like that, feel free. But this isn't the place to do it. – Nicol Bolas Sep 5 '12 at 14:58

Stack Overflow is a Q&A site. It is not a general forum. Thus, it is not a place to make announcements of any kind.

Even in a general forum this kind of announcements are usually closed/deleted as "spam". – BalusC Sep 5 '12 at 14:37
All I did was ask over on #javascript where was the best place to announce a project (including whether it was acceptable on satckoverflow). But having been hit with no less than 12 downpoints (and rising ;) in the space of as many minutes, I GET THE HINT!! (So please stop hammering on that down button ;) However I do think there is maybe some element of groupthink going on here, there is no need to be so unresponsive. – user1351235 Sep 5 '12 at 14:43
That is the risk of proposing an idea on meta. Did you follow the link posted by Lix? It explains that down-voting is different here than on the main site. – Aaron Bertrand Sep 5 '12 at 14:51
