What is meta? ×
Meta Stack Exchange is where users like you discuss bugs, features, and support issues that affect the software powering all 122 Stack Exchange communities.

Can someone please create the tag on Stack Overflow? We need to have it because...

  • Foo is a recent/upcoming release of a popular, established OS/language/framework
  • Foo is a hot new language/library
  • We're currently using some other tag for questions about Foo, but it's causing ambiguity with a separate thing that's also named Foo
  • Other conditions apply which would make a reasonable tag to create

Under these conditions:

  • When is it appropriate to create a tag?
  • Who can create a tag?
  • What happens if a tag is disputed?

For a moment, I took this way too literally... –  Bill the Lizard Sep 13 '12 at 16:45

while I agree and +1ed this, I don't think this question is asked that much to be in the faq list. And, what will happen if this get accepted or declined?, it will then no serve much value in the list. (this query seems to confirm that f-requests + faq isn't common) –  ajax333221 Sep 13 '12 at 16:49

@ajax333221 It was only asked about four times in the last four days (give or take). It is annoying. –  casperOne Sep 13 '12 at 16:54

I'm very tempted to create a new OS/language/library/framework and call it "foo". –  Keith Thompson Sep 14 '12 at 2:18

Could you make [frob] while you're at it? I'm constantly frobbing foo and have some real questions about best practices. –  Tim Post Sep 14 '12 at 7:16

To create a tag, one must apply it to an existing question. Any user with at least 500 reputation (1500 on Stack Overflow) may add new tags to any question at will by typing the new tag into the question's tags field, and submitting the post or edit1.

If you have enough reputation to create the tag, and if you think there is a clear need for a tag, go ahead and create it yourself. If the new tag causes controversy, you can always come back to MSO to ask the community to judge it.

If you do not have enough reputation to create the tag, then add a comment on your question. Say that you wanted to add the tag to the question, but do not have enough reputation. Please consider including a reason why you think this tag is appropriate. If someone with enough reputation agrees with you, they will be able to create the tag. Please delete your comment once this has happened. As alternative, you can request creating a tag by starting new meta discussion. This give other people the opportunity to discuss if new tag is needed.

1 Exception: a small number of tags have been blacklisted because they're not suitable for SO; these tags cannot be recreated.

@ben can suggested edits really contain new tags? Do you have reference? –  Shadow Wizard Feb 14 '13 at 12:17

@ben sorry for being picky but it's 1500 rep on the main site. (500 here on Meta :)) –  Shadow Wizard Feb 14 '13 at 13:07

I give up @sha :-) and don't apologise for being picky; it's my life-blood –  ben is uǝq backwards Feb 14 '13 at 15:28

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, always feel bad about that. :-S –  Shadow Wizard Feb 14 '13 at 15:50

Out of curiosity, is there any chance the tag blacklist is publicly available? –  DanteTheEgregore Sep 6 '13 at 12:41
