A question that I was struggeling with for some time:

I had used Gravatar before, but now I added my Stack Exchange email, and it did not work.

Of course I checked:

  • That I had the correct email address
  • That my picture was g rated
  • Whether waiting a few days would solve the problem

But after trying different things for a few weeks nothing seemed to help.

What exactly are you talking about? All you have to do on Stack Exchange's end is add the email address to your profile. It sounds like you were having trouble on Gravatar's end. –  animuson Dec 29 '12 at 19:36

I do believe that the problem is on gravatars side, yet I only experienced the consequence on Stackechange. Therefore I figured this would be the right place to archive my search for a solution. –  Dennis Jaheruddin Dec 29 '12 at 19:38

Caching. It's always caching. –  casperOne Dec 29 '12 at 20:23

No repro. But it did take 5-10 minutes from when I changed to a new email address until the gravatar showed on my Stack Overflow profile page. In addition, it may be required to log out and log in for the change to have effect (that was the case with GitHub). –  Peter Mortensen Apr 3 '13 at 21:59

Tough it may be possible to log in to gravatar with the StackExchange password, may not be sufficient to let StackExchange use the corresponding gravatar.

As I found out it does not work for me to add an email address to an existing gravatar account (and allocate a picture). You really need to create a new account where the StackExchange email is the primary email address.

After creating the new email my picture was visible within two minutes, but of course it may take up to a day or two.

I add email addresses to my Gravatar account all the time, including for StackExchange, without problems. I strongly doubt your answer is a general solution. –  Martijn Pieters Dec 29 '12 at 19:30

For Meta Stack Overflow, I am using an email address that is not the primary email address I set for gravatar.com, and the gravatar is used on Meta Stack Overflow. As long as there is a gravatar associated with the email address, Stack Exchange is happy. –  kiamlaluno Dec 29 '12 at 19:34

Thanks @MartijnPieters and kiamlaluno I have formulated my answer a bit more humble now as a possible solution. –  Dennis Jaheruddin Dec 29 '12 at 19:36

Note that all Stack Exchange does is send a hash of your email address to Gravatar.com, and it's that site that returns an image for that hash. How you registered your email address with Gravatar is of no concern for SE. –  Martijn Pieters Dec 29 '12 at 19:40

You just need to set the email in your profile to the same email you defined in Gravatar. In your profile page click "edit" and it should look like this:

Note that this way you can have different picture on different sites.

I am sure that this or something like a typo was not the reason that it did not work, because when I created the new gravatar account it automatically removed my email address as secondary email from my original gravatar account. –  Dennis Jaheruddin Dec 29 '12 at 19:52
