Looking at this post

enter image description here

it says "36% unknown". No user by the name of 'unknown' appears in the revision history (screenshot just in case some wag changes his username to 'unknown')

What madness is this? Who is this 'unknown' you speak of?

One of the users was probably known as "unknown" previously - the username attached to community wiki posts does not get updated when a user changes their name. See Do old usernames stick to CW posts by design? – animuson Jan 2 '13 at 8:04
@animuson no, I don't think so. More likely it's due to "Community" edits, in this case insert duplicate link then removing it. Probably the relevant field for user name is empty so it displays as "unknown". – Shadow Wizard Jan 2 '13 at 8:08
@animuson: I thought of that, but it seemed unlikely that that happened within 20 hours. I've seen the OP around, he hasn't changed his username. And the other user who added 36% of the info to the page (teresko), well, looking at replies to his comments he hasn't changed his username in the past day either. There are comments from yesterday calling him "teresko", and you can only change your name once a month. – Manishearth Jan 2 '13 at 8:09
@Manishearth even i am sure he(teresko) hasnt change his name for 77days .. nor me ..for 50 days – NullPoiиteя Jan 2 '13 at 8:11
@NullPointer - He means who? – hims056 Jan 2 '13 at 8:12
@hims056: no, the "who" was a joke. I know that there isn't any "who", it's a bug (or Community♦) – Manishearth Jan 2 '13 at 8:14
also same on this post – NullPoiиteя Jan 2 '13 at 11:21

OK, I'm almost sure I cracked it.

The percentage is calculated based on number of contributions and number of editors.

As you can see in the revisions, there are 6 editors (not counting the OP):

  • Community: 2 edits
  • Jared Farrish: 2 edits
  • Mat: 1 edit
  • tereško: 1 edit
  • Ben: 1 edit
  • Michael Mior: 1 edit

So 2 out of 6 is 33%, not sure why 36% probably some other things are counted.

As for "unknown" likely some blank field somewhere, not really sure about that one.

Stupid Community♦ breaking things again. If she starts on any of the sites I moderate, she's getting a suspension! ;-) – Manishearth Jan 2 '13 at 8:17
@Manishearth LOL now that's interesting idea!! Guess diamond users can't be suspended though but just thinking about this makes my laugh. :D – Shadow Wizard Jan 2 '13 at 8:19
They can, though that does nothing but anger the gods/community team (the only change is that our rep becomes one -- we can still post and use superpowers, I think). Though IIRC banning Community breaks a few things. The banning oneself thing has been tried before, but banning Community has not (a dev said not to try as it causes Big Problems). Though some people have come close to doing so ;-) – Manishearth Jan 2 '13 at 8:26
Don't press that big red button! ;) – Shadow Wizard Jan 2 '13 at 8:51
percentage is calculated purely on amount of line breaks, not on amount of characters edited – gnat Jan 2 '13 at 9:26
@gnat yeah, I do remember that one but also remember Jeff or Nick saying they'll handle it sometime. Can you find any post from them regarding this issue? – Shadow Wizard Jan 2 '13 at 9:32
@ShaWizDowArd I haven't seen anything related to plans like that. Most recent post I've seen was about a month ago from Shog9 and it gave er almost compelling explanation in favor of line breaks ;) – gnat Jan 2 '13 at 9:36
@gnat cheers, I changed my answer to reflect this. – Shadow Wizard Jan 2 '13 at 9:46
All revision history entries count. Those by Community User and notices (deleted, closed, bounty posted, etc.) count as 'Unkown'. The post from the question is now deleted, but 10 out of 20 entries in the revision history are either Community User entries or notices. Therefor there is a 50% Unknown on the post. – Martijn Pieters Jan 20 '15 at 19:06
@MartijnPieters awesome, this makes sense. Will you post it as new answer? – Shadow Wizard Jan 20 '15 at 19:54
@ShadowWizard: if only I didn't just find a post in the Many Memes page that contradicts the hypothesis.. – Martijn Pieters Jan 20 '15 at 19:56
@MartijnPieters oh no, so it's still unknown? ;) – Shadow Wizard Jan 20 '15 at 19:57
