Meta Stack Exchange is where users like you discuss bugs, features, and support issues that affect the software powering all 158 Stack Exchange communities.

What is meta?
Here's how it works:
  1. Any Stack Exchange user can ask a question
  2. The community provides support, votes on ideas, and reports bugs
  3. Your voice helps shape the way Stack Exchange operates

The description for the tag seems to have been copied/pasted from a Wikipedia-like source, and is thus incredibly long (it goes into the history of SMS messaging, complete with dates).

One could argue it even breaks formatting a bit, as it causes undesirable overlap of some elements.

Would it be beneficial to give it a formal description better suited for its use as a tag on SO?

Well, it is, notice the "source" link at the end. To answer your question, yes. And it should probably be renamed "short-message-service" with "sms" being a synonym of that. – casperOne Jan 25 '13 at 1:38
