Meta Stack Exchange is where users like you discuss bugs, features, and support issues that affect the software powering all 157 Stack Exchange communities.

What is meta?
Here's how it works:
  1. Any Stack Exchange user can ask a question
  2. The community provides support, votes on ideas, and reports bugs
  3. Your voice helps shape the way Stack Exchange operates

Recently, "Stack Exchange" was added to the names of certain sites (the ones without special names). This shows up in profiles, mobile site headers, and site <title>s.

However, some site names are breaking things:

(My account on the same site shows up like this, since my top 5 have relatively short names. This is what it used to look like)

This is happening for all users who have one of the sites with long names in their top 5 on all of their profiles network wide.

Could this be fixed? As it is it seems redundant to tack "Stack Exchange" on to all these site names.

Another 1st April from SE? – hjpotter92 Apr 1 '13 at 10:01
This was my bug that was masked by caching; a fix will be pushed out soon. – Jarrod Dixon Apr 1 '13 at 15:16
@JarrodDixon: Ah, OK. I was afraid that it was a feature :S. Thanks! – Manishearth Apr 1 '13 at 15:22
@Aditya: No, they're still there. – Manishearth Apr 1 '13 at 19:17

This has been fixed and deployed - let me know if you see any other instances of this happening, please!

Page <title>s and the headline of mobile sites still have this. It's not breaking anything, but just wanted to check if it's intentional :) – Manishearth Apr 1 '13 at 18:41
So the whole "Stack Exchange" addition was a mistake to begin with?? – Shadow Wizard Apr 2 '13 at 8:25
@ShaWizDowArd we did a refactoring of how our sites' names were stored in the DB and how they were accessed from the code. For SE 2.0 sites, we wanted "Stack Exchange" to be visible in almost all places the name is shown, exceptions being the logo and any extremely space-constrained usage. Sites that have vanity names, e.g. Ask Ubuntu, Seasoned Advice, aren't affected. – Jarrod Dixon Apr 2 '13 at 18:11
@Manishearth Removing the "Stack Exchange" from mobile's header in the next build, thanks. – Jarrod Dixon Apr 2 '13 at 18:12
Oh, one more place, magic links. Science Fiction & Fantasy Software Quality Assurance & Testing Personal Finance & Money (chat seems fine, though) – Manishearth Apr 2 '13 at 18:14
@Manishearth will be fixed in the next build. – Jarrod Dixon Apr 3 '13 at 21:06
Still seeing this problem on mobile – yoozer8 Apr 4 '13 at 3:47
@JarrodDixon This is also still happening in the auto-fill for migrating questions, which causes all sites with "Stack Exchange" appended to appear after their meta site in the list. "Stack Excahnge" is also inserted into the [chat] magic comment link. – yoozer8 Apr 4 '13 at 13:33
@Jim should be fixed now, thanks for finding that. – Jarrod Dixon Apr 5 '13 at 18:24
@JarrodDixon still shows up on mobile. Causes the site names to wrap to new lines. – yoozer8 Apr 8 '13 at 1:05
@Jim where is this happening? – Jarrod Dixon Apr 8 '13 at 1:09
@JarrodDixon on the profile page – yoozer8 Apr 8 '13 at 3:09
@Jim doh, my bad - I had forgotten there were mobile versions of our user page's panels. Will be fixed in the next build. – Jarrod Dixon Apr 8 '13 at 18:13
@JarrodDixon I'm not sure if this is intentional, but the <title> on metas is a bit weird. "Physics Meta Stack Exchange" probably should be "Physics Stack Exchange Meta" or "Physics Meta". – Manishearth Apr 11 '13 at 13:34
