I just changed my profile pic on SO using gravatar. It just uses a random generated one, but I have already uploaded my own. The preview shows it correctly, but why is the "main" one not right?

Screenshot:

Gravatar preview is right, main is not

Update

First time, the problem was fixed by hard-refreshing the page. After that, I slightly altered my avatar and uploaded another one there, and disabled the first one.

That time, hard-refreshing didn't help. I had to permanently remove the old one to see the change. That is a bug, in my opinion.

Have you tried clearing the cache? –  Antony May 19 '13 at 17:13

Good question, shouldn't this be tagged status-bydesign? –  Ian Carroll May 19 '13 at 17:16

@Antony first time round, that was the problem. Now I made a slight change and changed it again, but it's the same problem and ctrl+shift+R doesn't solve it. –  MDeSchaepmeester May 19 '13 at 17:21

I permanently deleted the old one from gravatar, hard refreshed again, and it's solved. But imo that should not be necessary. –  MDeSchaepmeester May 19 '13 at 17:24

As a wise user once told me, it's always about the cache. –  hjpotter92 May 19 '13 at 17:45

@MDeSchaepmeester: Yes, yes it should. No one wants users re-downloading avatars constantly because someone is making minor changes. They're heavily cached for a reason. –  animuson May 19 '13 at 17:59

We cache gravatars locally on the servers, for something like a week, as they don't change all that often. –  Oded May 19 '13 at 18:13
