Meta Stack Exchange is where users like you discuss bugs, features, and support issues that affect the software powering all 157 Stack Exchange communities.

What is meta?
Here's how it works:
  1. Any Stack Exchange user can ask a question
  2. The community provides support, votes on ideas, and reports bugs
  3. Your voice helps shape the way Stack Exchange operates

The tag doesn't seem to serve any real purpose. Almost all questions tagged with it would be just as good without it. It doesn't seem to have a very high number of questions on it either.

Could it be removed, or merged with another, more specific write operation tag?

I don't think it's totally useless as such. It should certainly be replaced with something more descriptive, though. – Emrakul Jun 11 '13 at 5:19
