Meta Stack Exchange is where users like you discuss bugs, features, and support issues that affect the software powering all 158 Stack Exchange communities.

What is meta?
Here's how it works:
  1. Any Stack Exchange user can ask a question
  2. The community provides support, votes on ideas, and reports bugs
  3. Your voice helps shape the way Stack Exchange operates

I have chosen to display 50 questions per page on Stack Overflow. However, as I have added "Ignored Tags", the number of questions per page has shrunk (for example, a few moments ago I could page through 5,790 pages, but the first page only has 14 questions when it should have 50). Ideally I would think that the result set would be filtered first, and then pagination applied. As it is, pagination appears to be applied first, and then the result set filtered, resulting in fewer questions per page than a user (me) would expect.

The problem is that the filtering is client-side, and all it is doing is setting display:none to the question. If it was all done on the server-side (or you were fetching client side) then perhaps something could be done. But as it is now, you are ignoring things that are already there. It is not stopping them from actually getting pulled back from the database.

Sorry about that. I read it after I posted it and it sounded wrong, so I made it worse. Hopefully it makes some sense now. – TheTXI Sep 9 '09 at 22:12
Just upvote me 4 times and I can phix your miskatez – John the Seagull Sep 10 '09 at 6:41
If this is the case, why can't the server send more entries than needed to fill the gap? This is still pretty annoying at times. – Mads Elvheim Mar 18 '10 at 13:22

Just bringing this back to the surface to highlight the issue with the current League of Legends contest over at Hiding just (zoomed for emphasis, also there is a bug in the sidebar when zooming):

9 out of 50 questions being displayed.

Darn, I thought we'd patched that once... will look – Marc Gravell Mar 26 '12 at 6:18
+1 million because of this! – KatieK Mar 26 '12 at 16:57
@MarcGravell I'm also affected by this one, glad to find out what it was so I can work around. Did you ever track down a root cause? – Stephen May 2 '12 at 2:21
