What is meta?
Here's how it works:

Like the facebook profile url, linkedin url, can we have a url at SO? May be it can be a good attraction to a resume!

+1, I don't see anything worth downvoting this question, he is clearly asking about url that can be used externally to link to SO account, the current URL has a number in it which looks like session id so you can't tell if it will work as a link to your account ... I consider it good question. – stefanB Dec 9 '09 at 23:00
@stefanB: On meta, downvotes can mean either the normal bad/no info/something question or it can just simply mean a person does not like the feature request. So don't worry, that is normal on meta to see feature requests with lots of downvotes. – Troggy Dec 9 '09 at 23:20

I don't get it. What is wrong with:

What is the number in there. That looks ugly :( – Faiz Nov 5 '09 at 6:47
probably it's confusing to users because the url contains some number which looks like session id, maybe you could try to explain the number and how to use the url ... for others looking for answers look further down the page for actual answer to this question ... – stefanB Dec 9 '09 at 22:58
Looks a bit bulky on my resume... – Dean Rather Jul 9 '12 at 4:51
Then don't put URLs on your resume. Problem solved. – GEOCHET Jul 9 '12 at 12:47
I think he has a point, what he meant is a short nice URL, look for LinkedIn, you can shorten your profile URL, GitHub is already short and nice, Google Plus also and most of the website. – Mohammad Anini Apr 29 '15 at 19:38
This is a Q&A site. Not LinkedIn. If you want to use LinkedIn, go use LinkedIn. – GEOCHET May 4 '15 at 13:22
I can't believe this hasn't been resolved. I would like something to add to a business card for example. just get rid of /users/<number>/ – Aymon Fournier Jun 21 at 3:23
I can't believe people still want this. Why not just use the link format above and stop whining? You can always redirect your own URL, after all. – GEOCHET Jun 21 at 15:57

You already have a profile url:

If you don't like the "faiz" part (perhaps you want to show your real name for resume purposes), you can put anything you want after that last "/" character to share around. The important part is the ID. For example, this works just fine:

Joel!? What happened to you? – perbert Sep 15 '09 at 18:29
Amid all the sarcasm and surprise it seems like this is the only helpful answer to the original question, I've been looking for similar thing and the top voted 'answer' does not really help to explain what are the components of url that you get for SO account – stefanB Dec 9 '09 at 22:55

I am going to quote here.

Repeat after me: SO is not a social networking site. - Cletus

I think you misunderstood the question, he asked about url to account, the number in url seems like a session id or something, maybe instead of quoting popular stuff you could explain the url for SO account ... – stefanB Dec 9 '09 at 22:56

Consider making yourself a customized or tinyurl to point to your StackOverflow URL.

Not too professional looking though. – Tyler Crompton Jul 14 at 10:26

Clean url to SO account for external linking?

The url is<uid>/<anything>

The uid is fixed, and will never change for a given account. Anything can be placed after the uid - SO ignores it.

Customized URLs beyond that are not currently possible because everything on SO is tied to the UID, not the username, and there may in fact be several "John F" in the system. To implement something like this would require a system like the Careers website, where you have to reserve your URL.

While technically possible, there is no compelling reason (yet) why the current UID system won't meet everyone's needs.

Why yet another profile? If I could link my Twitter Account and maybe integrate my LinkedIn and/or Facebook account, that could be a much better idea. (And with integration I mean more than just linking to it). I think I have profiles on about 10 sites now, and most are not up-to-date because I see no point in 10 sites asking for a profile.

Vanity? Maybe some people spend a good part of their time maintaining their profiles that way... – Stu Thompson Sep 15 '09 at 17:57
Its like if in my resume I wanted to give a URL to SO so that one can get a better grasp of my level of awareness, I thought a neat URL will help. – Faiz Nov 5 '09 at 6:50

This is the Internet, and you have a place to put raw HTML. Put a link to facebook if that is what you want in your profile.

stackoverflow is not facebook, even if they sound a lot similar.

-1 How does stackoverflow sound a lot similar to facebook? – Troggy Sep 15 '09 at 18:04
They both contain an f and two o's. – Michael Stum Sep 15 '09 at 18:14
@Troggy: I like this ;) – Alex Rozanski Sep 15 '09 at 18:15
It was a joke? – perbert Sep 15 '09 at 18:28
They sound similar enough that sometimes I write on people's walls on SO and ask technical questions on FB. Course, I'm also constantly drunk. – belgariontheking Sep 16 '09 at 1:57
I'd like to see the answers at FB to those questions. Also, I've mastered to keep myself .1337% Blood Alcohol Concentration the whole day. I've got an addiction, not a problem. – perbert Sep 16 '09 at 2:39
