Meta Stack Exchange is where users like you discuss bugs, features, and support issues that affect the software powering all 158 Stack Exchange communities.

What is meta?
Here's how it works:
  1. Any Stack Exchange user can ask a question
  2. The community provides support, votes on ideas, and reports bugs
  3. Your voice helps shape the way Stack Exchange operates

When I go to the account view, I see this large, empty, grey box. What is it? Why is it there? Does it need to be there? Might it be something in the future? Could it be something in the future? Should it be deleted?

GREY BOX (imagecabin? imageshack was down. where is imagepalace?)

It's where your 'About me' values go when you edit your profile.

Then why can't it tell what it is? A dead, mute empty grey box always looks quite defective to me. Things that aren't obvious should explain themselves. – ygoe Feb 12 '11 at 11:24

That is your bio/About Me section.

You can edit it and fill out a short little something that you want the rest of the community to know about you.
