What is meta? ×
Meta Stack Exchange is where users like you discuss bugs, features, and support issues that affect the software powering all 131 Stack Exchange communities.

Shoggington the Ninth and I were having a conversation on Wave, and I mentioned that I wanted to get everyone's Google Wave ID, so that we can have behind-the-scenes secret conversations about ponies and waffles and waffles covered in ponymaple syrup.

But the Shog said that such a thread wouldn't be appropriate. So I asked him if making a thread asking if it would be appropriate would be appropriate. He said yes (transcript attached):

Shogversation

So, is it acceptable to make a thread about SO users' Wave IDs on Meta? If not, how am I supposed to get Tony the Pony's Wave ID so that I can ask him embarrassing questions about what colour the sky is in England? What about other IDs, like Steam? If I made a Steam Community for SO (like the one I made for TDWTF), would it be appropriate to announce it here?

I know we're not here for community lovey-dovey crap like that, which is why I'm not suggesting that SO have these features added to it. It's more that I'm wondering how I can gauge interest in things that can be used to interact with other users, or if I should even bother trying.

What's Wave then? –  random Nov 5 '09 at 15:25

Is that Lady Death in your Wavatar? –  random Nov 5 '09 at 15:33

It's a very, very angry picture of a character from a game whose name I refuse to mention in public. –  XMLbog Nov 5 '09 at 15:36

Is the game Guild Wars? –  random Nov 5 '09 at 15:51

No. –  XMLbog Nov 5 '09 at 16:12

So make the google wave thread already! I think it's particularly applicable for software developers to connect using wave, as they'll be the first ones developing gadgets for it. Also, integration of SO and wave via the wave API could yield some significant benefits for the most prolific SO users. –  Adam Davis Nov 5 '09 at 16:21

@Adam Davis: If you want it so much, why don't you make it? Then you can join the fun with shog and I. Or you could look down at Jon's answer and join up that way. –  XMLbog Nov 5 '09 at 16:26

since you own this question, YOU should edit all the posted wave email addresses into the question body. It'd be more useful than the image, anyway.. –  Jeff Atwood Nov 5 '09 at 16:50

This question is about asking that kind of question. I don't want to totally change around the nature of a question just because it received an answer. –  XMLbog Nov 5 '09 at 16:57

@Jeff: I upvoted this question because of the image, so don't say it wasn't useful... –  Ladybug Killer Nov 5 '09 at 20:02

wtf is googlewave anyway, yet another newfangled social networking thingy? –  Ether Nov 6 '09 at 2:05

@Ether: I've been using it for two days and I still have no idea what it is. –  XMLbog Nov 6 '09 at 2:08

Google Wave is long dead. Even if this were considered a good idea it's simply not possible. –  Al E. Dec 30 '13 at 15:59

I think this is a perfectly acceptable meta topic.

Although I personally am highly skeptical of the actual utility of the segway Google Wave relative to the hype. It's sort of hard to understand.

But I've been wrong before.

I agree. Wave is weird, and that's why I want to try to have fun with it before it explodes. –  XMLbog Nov 5 '09 at 15:31

You know what's great about discussing things on Wave vs. discussing them on MSO? Threads. Or "wavelets", in Wave's Wave Terminology. It's like a persistent headache that you forget you even had, until it's not there anymore and suddenly you hate the world just a little bit less... –  Shog9 Nov 5 '09 at 16:38

@Shog9 - You mean "Wavinology." –  Super Long Names are Hilarious Nov 27 '09 at 7:49

IMHO, coordinating users' participation in non-SO services isn't really on-topic for MSO. I suggest you use another service for this task - Wave would be a good choice, as it has poll and map gadgets and I've been made to understand that such things are useful for "social"-type things.

I dunno, the rules are looser for meta. –  Jeff Atwood Nov 5 '09 at 15:30

Did Atwood just say "the losers rule meta"? –  user27414 Nov 5 '09 at 16:35

I guess this question might as well become the one it talks about...

My wave ID is nothing particularly secret: jonathan.skeet@googlewave.com

Leave it to Tony the Pony to get upvotes for doing nothing other than typing an e-mail into the answer field. –  XMLbog Nov 5 '09 at 19:11

Having examined your image using sophisticated sciencey type stuff like algorithms and VB GUI interfaces, I have been able to extract the image of the third member of your conversation:

CSI POWERS ACTIVATE!

Gasp! It's none other than Jeff Atwood's evil twin: Chet Atwood! All this time you have been conspiring with him and noted rapscallion Shog9 to bring down StackOverflow! Clearly we cannot allow you to make a thread asking for Google Wave IDs of innocent MSO users. No doubt you have a nefarious plot to abuse their trust to further your plans for StackOverflow domination. You must be stopped!

Bwahaha. You can do nothing to stop me, for now I have enlisted the mighty power of Jon Skeet himself to take down Stack Overflow and everything it represents! –  XMLbog Nov 5 '09 at 16:13

I believe Wave is one of the more suitable services to connect via meta for software developers. Not only are we going to be the ones doing the most interesting things with Wave, but there may be a lot of value for very prolific SO users if some developers work on Wave gadgets and API integration with SO.

At any rate, mine is stienman@googlewave.com.

And would this also be a good place to beg people for wave invites?

I was wondering how I'd get one –  ChrisF Nov 5 '09 at 16:48

I'd give you one if I had any. I'm a secondary invitee, not a primary, so I have no invites to send. –  XMLbog Nov 5 '09 at 16:49

I just gave the last of mine to a hobo. Otherwise, I'd probably share. –  Shog9 Nov 5 '09 at 16:56

I'll become a hobo if that will help. Anyone need a house? –  beska Nov 5 '09 at 16:58

@ChrisF yup it's not your gmail or normal google account. @beska You're invite is underway @Rich B Let me know your email and I'll invite away –  Ivo Flipse Nov 6 '09 at 10:32

We need a new feature; I'd like to upvote Ivo's karma. –  beska Nov 6 '09 at 13:59

@Ivo Can I have one? My id is my MSO screen name at gmail dot com. (I feel like I just typed a send-me-teh-codez question). –  Amarghosh Nov 7 '09 at 8:33

Never mind. I just got one. –  Amarghosh Nov 7 '09 at 11:03

I'm just going to throw mine out there: thomas.j.owens@googlewave.com
