What is meta? ×
Meta Stack Exchange is where users like you discuss bugs, features, and support issues that affect the software powering all 131 Stack Exchange communities.

Every so so often, "serverfault questions" are asked on stackoverflow.

Just like people can vote to close a question (which often happens to such questions), it would possibly be nice if people could vote for "send to serverfault" instead, and if there are enough votes the question is closed and automatically opened at the other site.

The question would also get a link to the quesion created on the other site.

Same for the other sibling sites, of course.

Drawback: Maybe it's better if the person asking actually has to re-question at the other site (and thus search for an already existing answer there first).

You already can vote to close as "belongs on serverfault.com" (if you have 3000 reputation) which does exactly what you're describing...

Here's an example of such a question on StackOverflow: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1088346/adding-custom-dns-entries-for-name-resolution-in-the-local-network-closed

and here's its migrated counterpart on ServerFault: http://serverfault.com/questions/36562/adding-custom-dns-entries-for-name-resolution-in-the-local-network

Oops. RTFM :-) Thanks! –  user130386 Jul 7 '09 at 4:31
@Brimstedt - I don't think it's quite RTFM as I wasn't aware that using that reason on vote to close actually moved the question until quite recently. –  ChrisF Jul 7 '09 at 8:33
