I just spotted that last week an answer I gave on Jun 16 last year was accepted on Jan 15, just over under 7 months later.

This makes me wonder what the longest interval is, there is certainly scope for it to be considerably longer, but there doesn't seem to be enough information to find out from the data dump.

Anybody got a longer gap or a way to find out the longest?

If I get a spare few minutes, I'll do a query on the StackOverflow answer dumps. That's the only way to find out really... –  Noldorin Jan 20 '10 at 15:23

a new winner: my answer! stackoverflow.com/questions/274840/…: 15 MONTHS! (to the day). That should also qualify for the longest time before an Enlightened badge... –  VonC Feb 8 '10 at 14:26

Caveat: StackQL is probably out of date

According to this query on StackQL:

select top 5 posts.Id, posts.CreationDate, votes.CreationDate,
datediff(second,posts.CreationDate,votes.CreationDate) from posts
right join votes on votes.PostId =posts.Id and votes.VoteTypeId = 1 order by
datediff(second,posts.CreationDate,votes.CreationDate) desc

These results are given:

Id CreationDate CreationDate1 Column1
6980 8/10/2008 1:05:00 AM 9/29/2009 12:00:00 AM 35852100
6687 8/9/2008 7:50:31 AM 9/28/2009 12:00:00 AM 35827769
2901 8/5/2008 9:45:17 PM 9/22/2009 12:00:00 AM 35604883
3638 8/6/2008 4:28:26 PM 9/21/2009 12:00:00 AM 35451094
17236 8/19/2008 11:54:37 PM 9/30/2009 12:00:00 AM 35078723

Which indicates this answer is the winner, with an interval over a year, being posted August 10th 2008 and accepted September 29th 2009.

And to answer a related question, "What is the longest interval between a question being aksed and having an accepted answer?", according to this query on StackQL:

select top 5 posts.Id, posts.CreationDate, votes.CreationDate,
datediff(second,posts.CreationDate,votes.CreationDate) from posts
right join posts b on b.ParentId = posts.Id
right join votes on votes.PostId = b.Id and votes.VoteTypeId = 1 order by
datediff(second,posts.CreationDate,votes.CreationDate) desc

These results are given:

Id CreationDate CreationDate1 Column1
5855 8/8/2008 12:40:02 PM 9/28/2009 12:00:00 AM 35896798
6899 8/9/2008 8:11:18 PM 9/29/2009 12:00:00 AM 35869722
2872 8/5/2008 9:19:37 PM 9/22/2009 12:00:00 AM 35606423
3619 8/6/2008 4:16:19 PM 9/21/2009 12:00:00 AM 35451821
6207 8/8/2008 5:59:41 PM 9/21/2009 12:00:00 AM 35272819

The interval between this question being asked and having an accepted answer is over a year, being asked August 8th 2008 and having an accepted answer September 28th 2009.

Would have been funnier if the same 2 people were involved.... –  Tyler Carter Jan 20 '10 at 16:52

StackQL hosts the September data dump, that explains the results: The questions are from the time around the launch, the accepting happened at the end of September '09 (i.e. at the end-of-data). Although the acceptance rate might have given a little push (August '09), I would suppose that answers to questions from "back then" still get accepted to-date. –  balpha Jan 20 '10 at 16:53

Nice, looking at the intervals on the top 5, it implies that this kind of thing is fairly common, so there may well be answers over 16 months old being accepted now –  Rich Seller Jan 20 '10 at 16:55
