Meta Stack Exchange is where users like you discuss bugs, features, and support issues that affect the software powering all 158 Stack Exchange communities.

What is meta?
Here's how it works:
  1. Any Stack Exchange user can ask a question
  2. The community provides support, votes on ideas, and reports bugs
  3. Your voice helps shape the way Stack Exchange operates

Bill the Lizard, a moderator on Chat, said that he can star his own messages. I don't think anyone should be allowed to star their own messages on Chat, even moderators. I don't see how it could be useful, so I think that this is a bug and should be removed.

In my own defense, someone asked me to try it. I'm not just that vain. ;) – Bill the Lizard Jul 14 '10 at 23:03
I see you're very addicted to the new chat feature. You should totally drop that and try jQuery. – Jon Seigel Jul 14 '10 at 23:04
don't overdo it! ;-) – Andy E Jul 14 '10 at 23:09
If you're an owner you can star your own messages. Not that I know exactly how?!?!?! – Lee Louviere Sep 29 '11 at 16:21
@Xaade: you can pin 'em, but you can't star 'em. – Andy E Sep 29 '11 at 19:52

Yea; it does seem like it should be.

I vote for the following image to pop up when someone tries to flag their own message: alt text

all I see is "I vote for the following image to pop up when someone tries to flag their own message: alt text" – Pops Sep 17 '10 at 15:59
@popular demand do you have adblock on? It's a jpg from here:… – George Stocker Sep 17 '10 at 18:06
no, it is installed, but I've had it disabled since who knows when. Ah, but the direct link takes me to a "this site is blocked by [company name]" page though, which probably explains it. – Pops Sep 17 '10 at 18:10
Where I am, MSDN returns "This site under category (social blogs and forums) is blocked" Too bad someone invented smart phones. – Lee Louviere Sep 29 '11 at 16:32

While we're at it can we stop dangling the carrot? If the link isn't there we won't be tempted to click on it, only to receive this severe telling off:

this is status-completed now :-) – Andy E Jul 15 '10 at 10:40
what link did that???? The edit, or flag. Certainly not Andy's head? – Lee Louviere Sep 29 '11 at 16:30

Room owners can also star their messages, but the process of going about this actually appears as a legitimate bug and not an allowed power.

It's the same for mods, they can't actually star their own messages, but they can pin/unpin them to end up with a star – Michael Mrozek Sep 29 '11 at 16:26
Oh noes.... they found my trick. Don't take it away!!!! – Lee Louviere Sep 29 '11 at 16:28
I used to get a sense of accomplishment when my messages were starred. Now that I have the cheat-code, the game isn't fun to play anymore. – Lee Louviere Sep 29 '11 at 16:29
