Meta Stack Exchange is where users like you discuss bugs, features, and support issues that affect the software powering all 128 Stack Exchange communities.

I was looking at this deleted question (only 10ks can see it), and saw that it had been merged but was thinking that the stub would be left to help out on searches in the future.

Some references are:

should-question-stubs-left-over-from-migration-be-deleted
when-merging-questions-leave-the-duplicate-one-as-a-placeholder

I went to test out if the stub functionality was happening in the background by going to the search box and searching for "quote formatting". Neither a stub, or the duplicated question came up in the search.

I think we really need to make this stub functionality work better, or we're just going to get more duped postings. At the very least we should stop deleting questions that have been merged.

EDIT: I also went to Google and searched on quote formatting site:meta.stackoverflow.com, got a link to the deleted post, but when I clicked on it, it took me to a Page Not Found page.

IIRC, the only case when there's auto-redirect is when a migrated question is deleted. –  Jon Seigel Jul 22 '10 at 17:23
