Meta Stack Exchange is where users like you discuss bugs, features, and support issues that affect the software powering all 157 Stack Exchange communities.

What is meta?
Here's how it works:
  1. Any Stack Exchange user can ask a question
  2. The community provides support, votes on ideas, and reports bugs
  3. Your voice helps shape the way Stack Exchange operates

I ran across the following ad on Stack Overflow, and I had no idea what GIS actually is.

It would be better to show the full name of the topic instead of just GIS.

FWIW: it's pronounced, "gee eye ess" (if that makes you more comfortable clicking on it). – Shog9 Aug 14 '10 at 4:23
To be clear, I know exactly what the GIS site is about. But I am just bringing this up for the benefit of people who may be interested in this topic, but not know the acronym. – jjnguy Aug 14 '10 at 5:56

GIS stands for Geographic Information System...

Wikipedia definition:

A geographic information system (GIS), or geographical information system, is any system that captures, stores, analyzes, manages, and presents data that are linked to location. In the simplest terms, GIS is the merging of cartography, statistical analysis, and database technology.

does that help? :-)

To answer your question, yes the ads could be a bit more clear...that would be more helpful and attract more clicks.

Well, maybe if you clicked it, you could find out what GIS means?

So this is pretty much [status-bydesign] from my perspective..

I'm always suspicious of ads and don't trust clicking them. sorry. – studiohack Aug 14 '10 at 0:57
I understand that if I clicked on it, I would find out. But, if I knew what the site were supposed to be about, I may be more interested. I just brought this up in the interest of bringing more people to the new SE sites. – jjnguy Aug 14 '10 at 2:04
