Meta Stack Exchange is where users like you discuss bugs, features, and support issues that affect the software powering all 150 Stack Exchange communities.

I feel that there should be a period of time after a bounty expires before it is automatically assigned. This way, each bountied question can have its full 7-day timespan for meaningful answers to be added, and no bounty offerer will have to cut a bounty period short or risk missing out on being able to assign a bounty.

A period of 12-72 hours would be more than sufficient IMO.

This question has been asked before and already has an answer. If those answers do not fully address your question, please ask a new question.

So you're asking for the bounty period to be extended? – waiwai933 Aug 31 '10 at 17:08
I could have sworn this was a duplicate, but I can't find an original. +1 – Jon Seigel Aug 31 '10 at 17:24
@Jon Seigel: The duplicate is here: meta.stackexchange.com/questions/49830/… – Robert Cartaino Aug 31 '10 at 18:30
This question is ENTIRELY NOT A DUPLICATE. It is not a request to extend the bounty, it is about having a time period before it is AUTOMATICALLY assigned. – Chris Marisic Sep 13 '10 at 19:50
Did you fully read the question that we proposed this as a duplicate of? Robert's answer suggests specifically having a period before the automatic assignment, and George comments that it is exactly what his intent with the question is. Which is the same as your intent. To quote, "What does make sense is that there should be a grace period after the bounty period is over to allow the author time to select the best answer [...] after which, if the author has not selected an answer, the normal auto-accepting process kicks in" – Grace Note Sep 13 '10 at 19:59
That answer is unrelated to that question! To close a question for duplicate because a relevant answer to it is posted on a non-relevant question is asinine. – Chris Marisic Sep 14 '10 at 0:29
The answer is unrelated to that question? George, the author of that question, commented to Robert stating that his answer is equivalent to what his demands are. How is that unrelated? – Grace Note Sep 16 '10 at 13:15
Glad to see this was implemented. – Chris Marisic Jul 21 '11 at 19:57
It's funny looking back at this question years later and seeing the absurd bureaucracy that is SO, especially in regards to meta. I specifically propose a feature that is eventually adopted and the question is sitting as closed for duplicate. – Chris Marisic May 20 at 15:01

As long as this doesn't also extend the time the question is on the featured tab, I think this is a good idea, and it sounds like that's what you mean

If it does, you're essentially just extending the bounty period, and you have the same problem but 12-72 later than you did before, so that doesn't help any

Right this is nothing about extending the bounty period. It's about the fact you have no time to evaluate the answers after the 7th day whereas you should. – Chris Marisic Sep 13 '10 at 19:51
