Meta Stack Exchange is where users like you discuss bugs, features, and support issues that affect the software powering all 157 Stack Exchange communities.

What is meta?
Here's how it works:
  1. Any Stack Exchange user can ask a question
  2. The community provides support, votes on ideas, and reports bugs
  3. Your voice helps shape the way Stack Exchange operates

I've recently found out that does not work while does.

Now I know the www prefix isn't liked, but it should exist, and simply redirect to For those of us who are used to/accidentally type www at the beginning, this is really annoying.

I wouldn't classify this as "really annoying", unless you keep doing which case I don't think DNS is the problem :) – Nick Craver Sep 15 '10 at 1:20
Maybe really annoying was a bit much, buts its still annoying. Were talking <5 minutes fix this. – TheLQ Sep 15 '10 at 1:26
Just type the www at the end... you'll be much more amused - – Peter Ajtai Sep 15 '10 at 1:27
IMO, this is a feature request, not a bug. – jjnguy Sep 15 '10 at 2:24

1 also not working – Alex Angas Sep 15 '10 at 6:42
Why can't you just have www redirect to the non-www version like practically every other site out there? Why is it hated so much? The Prefix www is pushed out on commercials, websites, blogs, auto-fixing url tools in software, etc. Your ignoring a standard here. – TheLQ Sep 15 '10 at 14:11
BTW, exists, exists, exists, exists, exists, exists, exists, exists, exists, etc etc etc. So why is SO the exception? – TheLQ Sep 15 '10 at 14:32

Though I get the whole www thing I don't think it makes sense for sites that already have 3 parts like:

If we went with allowing this then we would have to do and etc .... where would this madness stop?

I didn't downvote, but this does strike me as a very impractical solution – Jeff Atwood Sep 16 '10 at 1:58
@Jeff: Ya, but it's a rediculous question :) – uɐɯsO uɐɥʇɐN Sep 16 '10 at 2:36
