Web performance proposal

from the comments:

These skills, tools, and best practices are specific enough that there is a niche industry forming around it. Check out the O'Reilly Velocity conference for justification that there is enough demand for this type of community.

I agree that there might be a niche industry forming around web performance. But I'm pretty sure web performance questions would of interest to many outside that niche industry, mostly programming related, easily findable through the performance tag, and get high quality fast answers on SO. I don't think we'll get that much benefit from the fragmentation.

I think it should certainly cover back-end performance issues as well.

This would probably be on-topic for serverfault. Webmasters should cover anything else.

I agree with you, but why are you bringing it up here? Area 51 seems like the more suitable place. –  Michael Petrotta Sep 24 '10 at 0:18

@Michael where on area51 would you suggest? The comments don't really attract much attention. –  Gordon Gustafson Sep 26 '10 at 15:15

I imagine your request is inspired from Jeff's recent post about merging two proposals. The purpose of his post is to vet the idea of merging smaller programming topics into Programmers.SE, using an immediate example.

While your example is a good one, we really don't want to break these issues/discussions out of Area 51. One of our top priorities (and the subject of extensive discussions; believe me) is how best to improve inter-proposal communications so we can have these discussions within Area 51. That's where they need to be, even if the facilities aren't up to par at the moment. They will be.

I'm going to close your proposal-merging suggestions… stay tuned.
