What other sites (not necessarily tech) that use a badge/reputation system like stackoverflow. I am building a basketball website and will probably be looking for a metaphor thats more fitting than badges.

Not really basketball related, but for comparing other rep-system implementations, Forums.DevShed.com uses a rep system for forum posters.

Jeff was inspired by the xbox system, so you may want to look at that. I'm not a gamer, but I guess you earn things for doing non-essential stuff in the game. This teaches you how to play the game, and encourages you to explore.

You could give negative badges, too. Trolls could get the "Bruce Bowen" for trying to pick a fight. Fakers could get the "Vlade". I could go on, but that would be unfortunate.

Your question should have been "What other sites (not necessarily tech) use a badge/reputation system like StackOverflow?" instead of "Badge System".

www.kongregate.com (flash gaming site) uses a very similar badge/achievement/points/reputation system. Check it out for ideas. You get points and badges for achieving various goals in many of the games. Although, I'm not sure you get anything for the points (abilities on the site, etc.) for the points. You just kinda get bragging rights. Also a lot of fun for when you're bored at work!

For badge like things I haven't found many,

  • Wikipedia have barn stars, which any user can award to any other user.
  • XBox360 have some system that stack overflow was based upon.
  • The gaming site Kongregate has "achievements", which are badges.

For reputation systems, there are many:

The reputation system is a big part of buying and selling on eBay.

Not only do they have feedback scores, but they have "stars" based on that score -- everything from the...

Yellow star (alt text) = 10 to 49 ratings

to the...

Silver shooting star (alt text) = 1,000,000 ratings or more.
