Meta Stack Exchange is where users like you discuss bugs, features, and support issues that affect the software powering all 158 Stack Exchange communities.

What is meta?
Here's how it works:
  1. Any Stack Exchange user can ask a question
  2. The community provides support, votes on ideas, and reports bugs
  3. Your voice helps shape the way Stack Exchange operates

This question already has an answer here:

Or at least have maybe the ability to set some other answers as assisted answer. I find myself finding an acceptable answer unusable while other answers underneath it might be more suitable. Would it be safe to say that the accepted answer should only make sense to the asker whether or not the question is important to others?

This question has been asked before and already has an answer. If those answers do not fully address your question, please ask a new question.

Also note that the new bounty system allows one to reward answers that helped, even if they aren't the accepted answer. – Adam Davis Feb 6 '11 at 5:38
@gnat: you mean the reverse, right? That other post has been duped to this one. – Martijn Pieters Mar 19 '15 at 14:01
@MartijnPieters dupe direction opposite to one I suggested here looks even better; I just couldn't vote this way because of the past realised CV over there. Overall, whole bunch of related questions listed in comment above seems to be in a need for a solid "canonical" dupe target – gnat Mar 19 '15 at 14:30

I agree with the OP here, especially in areas like cooking, philosophy and religion. There are multiple answers for certain questions.

It really doesn't, because S[OFU] are meant, ideally, for questions that have a single best answer. Making more than one answer acceptable would subvert that.

then would would somebody bother reading the other answers when looking for an answer to a question already asked? we might as well hide them. – ak3nat0n Jul 18 '09 at 19:12
Plenty of people do, but it can't really be forced. – chaos Jul 18 '09 at 19:18
@Zaladane: One good reason not to hide the other answers is that they're sometimes better than the accepted one. One person chooses what answer to accept. Sometimes that person makes a bad choice. Not so surprising really: they didn't know the answer to begin with, after all. :) – Telemachus Jul 18 '09 at 22:06
@chaos: do you know this - that "plenty" of people read "other answers" - to be a fact? I doubt it. – Sridhar Ratnakumar Sep 9 '09 at 16:56
Actually, I do, by the fact that I get upvotes on good answers that I write even when a different answer is accepted. – chaos Sep 9 '09 at 17:19
Sorry, I disagree. I read other answers. Also, there is more than one way to instantiate an array. -1 – Moshe Nov 8 '10 at 20:01
