On Stack Overflow, how is the "enter the code" button implemented?

See the function command.doCode in wmd.js (in the current version, it starts at line 2106). It should be pretty much self-explaining.

If you mean, what formatting does it apply, it applies the pre HTML tag. If you hover over the formatting buttons they tell you what the formatting is...
