Meta Stack Exchange is where users like you discuss bugs, features, and support issues that affect the software powering all 158 Stack Exchange communities.

What is meta?
Here's how it works:
  1. Any Stack Exchange user can ask a question
  2. The community provides support, votes on ideas, and reports bugs
  3. Your voice helps shape the way Stack Exchange operates

If I open an account on a second Stack Exchange site with the same email address as my Stack Overflow account, will they automatically be linked?

If so, how can I avoid it?

Yes, a second SE account will automatically be associated with your SO account.

There is no way to avoid this, but after the account is created, you can go to your user page, open the Accounts tab, and click Clear All Associations, which I think should do what you want.

Thanks. Will this last, or will the automatic association continue occurring? – user148268 Feb 15 '11 at 10:49
Not sure, but judging by this question, it seems it will continue: – Jason Plank Feb 15 '11 at 10:56
kind of frustrating... :-/ thanks! – user148268 Feb 17 '11 at 17:56
Does this happen instantly? I just registered an account at Area 51, and had to manually "add" my email again somewhere in the profile before it linked. I registered with an email that was already linked to about 6 accounts. – keyser May 25 '12 at 15:40
