Meta Stack Exchange is where users like you discuss bugs, features, and support issues that affect the software powering all 157 Stack Exchange communities.

What is meta?
Here's how it works:
  1. Any Stack Exchange user can ask a question
  2. The community provides support, votes on ideas, and reports bugs
  3. Your voice helps shape the way Stack Exchange operates

If a question is voted as a duplicate of a question with leading or trailing whitespace in the title, the whitespace isn't trimmed, breaking the auto-generated comment.

The real question is: why aren't question titles trimmed before they get put into the database in the first place? – Jon Seigel Feb 19 '11 at 0:07

The bug is that titles have leading or trailing spaces at all. I am fixing that now, looks like it's been this way for quite a while. Thanks for bringing it to my attention!

Make sure to TRIM() existing titles. – SLaks Feb 20 '11 at 0:24
