Meta Stack Exchange is where users like you discuss bugs, features, and support issues that affect the software powering all 128 Stack Exchange communities.

After 2.5 years of being almost entirely unchanged, we're thinking about redesigning

http://stackoverflow.com/users

This page is kind of underutilized real estate at the moment:

  • It is rather monotonous, since it always shows the same list and Jon Skeet is always on top. (Although to be fair, we do link to the reputation leagues on it.)
  • The tabs it offers are not particularly relevant; when was the last time you clicked on the "oldest" tab for example?

We are in the process of redesigning this page, and I wanted to get your input on a few things.

  1. If we were to show a few more bits of info about each user, other than the standard user card, what would you like to see?

  2. What tabs and sort orders would be helpful and interesting to see here, that would make this page more fundamentally useful?

Be advised that our first pass on this will make the weekly rep leagues essentially the default view here, with an option to show monthly and quarterly. But we think other views and orders might be even more helpful as a default.

Mockups and ideas welcome!

Hmm, I have never clicked on the "oldest" tab until just now. I never even noticed the tabs. –  raven Feb 25 '11 at 20:30

Blasphemy! How dare you declare a page with Jon Skeet on top as monotonous? :) –  LeakyCode Feb 27 '11 at 2:11

What tabs and sort orders would be helpful and interesting to see here

Maybe a tab which shows the "most active new users", i.e. users who registered less than 1 (or 2 or 3?) months ago, sorted by their reputation. Might be a motivation for new users to continue participating on the site.

A couple suggestions.

  • Show fewer users per page. I don't like having to scroll down to get to the pagination links.
  • Show a total user count. If I recall correctly, the old page had that. It's nice to be able to easily check out the relative sizes of Stack Exchange communities.

I know that there is already badge for, for example, PHP. But maybe it will be interesting if we can see if the user is a specialist or better know a particular language than another one.

I just wish this could have been accomplished without a rep recalc and the loss of rep - and privileges - so many people seem to have experienced.

it is unfortunate, but in the long run, it's not that big of a deal. The new rep score is your real rep, and the real number your privs should be based on. I lost ~500 myself. –  jjnguy Feb 28 '11 at 16:38

I would like to see the user recent activity based on my interest ( using the same criteria the front page uses to know what's interesting to me )

Probably using a quote or a recent comment, so we could see each time what that user is doing/answering/debating and we can "follow" him/her.

Sort of twitter timeline kind of.

The other tabs could be "activity" ( most active users ) and reputation/week/month/etc. So if someone doesn't match to Jon Skeet activity, clicking on reputation would bring current frontpage users

This information is already available, but we have to click to far to get it:

I think it would be interesting to see a flag showing the user's nationality and a symbol showing their gender (male/female).

We don't ask users their gender, so this really wouldn't be an option...and location is optional as well, so I'm not sure how that would work, especially as a sort. When Jeff's talking about the "user card", he means the little info block that currently includes the name, reputation and badges, rather than the info screen. –  Nick Craver Feb 25 '11 at 20:05

Neither of these bits of info are actually collected right now. We can guess nationality from location, but the user is totally free to enter whatever they want into the location field. I would like to see the user's location, but I don't think gender is really relevant. –  Kip Feb 25 '11 at 20:07

specify gender? please don't turn SO into a dating site. The last thing we need to start seeing is "ASL?" the only information we need from a user card is what's directly relevant to the SO experience –  user136507 Feb 25 '11 at 20:55

@user136507: keep in mind that there isn't only SO. For example gender information would be extremely relevant on the upcoming Parenting website: area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/4861/parenting –  Andreas Bonini Feb 25 '11 at 21:16

@Kop: 1) useful when browsing/searching the list of users? How? 2) We already have people "pretending" to be female on SO, thinking it'll get them some sympathy for their horrible, horrible questions. Don't really need more of that. –  Shog9 Feb 26 '11 at 0:16

evidence for "already have people pretending to be female"? –  hawbsl Feb 28 '11 at 1:01
