Meta Stack Exchange is where users like you discuss bugs, features, and support issues that affect the software powering all 158 Stack Exchange communities.

What is meta?
Here's how it works:
  1. Any Stack Exchange user can ask a question
  2. The community provides support, votes on ideas, and reports bugs
  3. Your voice helps shape the way Stack Exchange operates

The FAQ says that an invitation is needed to get a profile at all. I have got a profile without an invitation (presumably "based on your participation on Stack Overflow"), so I assumed no further invitation was needed. However, according to Importing information from the LinkedIn account to Careers 2.0, it is required to become an active candidate.

I think it should be made clear in the FAQ, or even better, the "Edit profile" button should be visible but disabled, with a tooltip explaining that an invite is required.
