Meta Stack Exchange is where users like you discuss bugs, features, and support issues that affect the software powering all 157 Stack Exchange communities.

What is meta?
Here's how it works:
  1. Any Stack Exchange user can ask a question
  2. The community provides support, votes on ideas, and reports bugs
  3. Your voice helps shape the way Stack Exchange operates

It doesn't make much sense that I am able to notify a user on chat, yet I can't auto-complete their usernames if I haven't seen them in the room.

Ummmmm, chat? Isn't already there? Type "@" and then type username, and press Tab. – YOU Apr 7 '11 at 14:02

@YOU It doesn't work for people you haven't seen in the room (i.e. they left before you joined) – Michael Mrozek Apr 7 '11 at 14:06

This would also help with "I wonder if this person will actually get a notification" as you're sending the message. – Rebecca Chernoff Apr 7 '11 at 15:58
