What is meta? ×
Meta Stack Exchange is where users like you discuss bugs, features, and support issues that affect the software powering all 133 Stack Exchange communities.

http://stackoverflow.net/ has a very similar logo, not including the overflowing stack though.

According to their about page:

Stackoverflow is a software development studio based in Brooklyn, New York. Our areas of expertise include developing complex web applications (including e-commerce solutions and Content Management Systems) interactive Flash Applications, and WordPress customizations (to name a few).

So maybe they aren't squatters after all...

Looks like a company that took advantage of the popularity of SO.

It is rather clear that the site is not a Q&A site, but promotional in nature.

The logo is similar (same typography), but without the graphic.

You certainly have noticed, and now everyone who reads your question will too ;)

Seems like a rip off anyway lol. Looks like they were in the web dev business back before SO came about so SO copies theyre logo or it was copied after SO got big... –  Taniqwah May 15 '11 at 15:45
@Taniqwah - Since the SO logo was created in a design competition, I would say it is the original :) –  Oded May 15 '11 at 15:47
That said, the font used, DIN, is a very commonly used font - it was, after all, designed original to be used for road and railway signs in Germany, so even the choice of typeface may not be deliberate –  Yi Jiang Sep 15 '12 at 4:48

The domain is registered to a contact at this address (same as listed on their contact page):

50 Bridge Street, #412
Brooklyn, NY 11201, USA

which is geographically quite close to SE's NY office. This could simply be coincidence as that area is pretty densely packed with businesses, but it could also be conveniently-located extra office space.

Also, the domain was (first?) registered in 2004, and if the work portfolio is accurate, the company seems relatively well-established.

I think this one is too close to call without an official answer.

SE is in Manhattan (in the financial district), not in Brooklyn, so the "geographically close" thing is a matter of perspective :) –  balpha May 15 '11 at 16:31
