Meta Stack Exchange is where users like you discuss bugs, features, and support issues that affect the software powering all 155 Stack Exchange communities.

What is meta?
Here's how it works:
  1. Any Stack Exchange user can ask a question
  2. The community provides support, votes on ideas, and reports bugs
  3. Your voice helps shape the way Stack Exchange operates

I think the real problem here is simply that it isn't a tag on the site.

The period makes no difference; asp.net is fine:

http://stackoverflow.com/feeds/tag?tagnames=asp.net&sort=newest

We could perhaps return an empty feed, but...

Did you mean to add a hyphen? (php-5.3)

http://stackoverflow.com/feeds/tag?tagnames=php-5.3&sort=newest

Ohhhhh I was sure that php5.3 was a tag, it's actually php-5.3 thanks! It's confusing though (php5 is a tag). Thank you – Matthieu Napoli Jun 3 '11 at 10:11
