Meta Stack Exchange is where users like you discuss bugs, features, and support issues that affect the software powering all 157 Stack Exchange communities.

What is meta?
Here's how it works:
  1. Any Stack Exchange user can ask a question
  2. The community provides support, votes on ideas, and reports bugs
  3. Your voice helps shape the way Stack Exchange operates

Or are they entirely separate from the community, apart from displaying the person's karma on the associated community?

"karma" == "reputation"? – Chris Frederick Jul 21 '11 at 19:32
See:…. Reputation is carried over, the badges are separate from the main site. – jonsca Jul 21 '11 at 19:39
Huh. I thought I'd closed this two or three minutes after posting. Guess it didn't get through. – mmyers Jul 21 '11 at 19:57

No, all Metas except for Meta Stack Overflow only show a users reputation on their main site. There are no reputation effects from participating in these Meta Sites.

Note that you can still earn badges on the Meta sites though.
