Jul 25, 2013 at 17:48 comment added user102937 People start looking for close reasons that fit, when they see that the community has clearly taken their eye off the ball. Note that the sole downvote on that answer is mine, because the answer has nothing whatsoever to do with programming. But I do agree that we have bigger fish to fry.
Jul 25, 2013 at 15:50 comment added Mysticial To reinforce @gnat's point, there is plenty of evidence that the current formula favors easy/open-ended questions and works against the high-quality technical ones. (If you want to see it and/or an explanation for why, just ping either of us and we can dump a mountain of evidence on the table.) But ultimately, it boils down to what you want the multicollider to show. If you want to keep on showing open-ended controversial stuff, then fine. That's the current behavior. But if you want to it to favor the high-quality technical stuff, then the formula can use some improvement.

Jul 25, 2013 at 5:26 comment added Shog9 This post and Stack Overflow, @gnat. You do know that most of the traffic brought in by the hot list comes from SO, right? That said, this meta post accounted for a pretty decent minority of the total pageviews when I checked earlier today.
