There is a simple and satisfying, if rather brutal, countermeasure to make dealing with this bug less obnoxious: rollback the intervening edit and ram that sucker through. (Submitting after rollback will go through with no further errors and no reload necessary.) Unfortunately, the rollback will not be consolidated in revision history with the following edit.

Here's a workaround: open the post in a new tab, make any edit you care to, then re-submit the original edit. Since you were now the last editor, it will go through, and will effectively replace the temporary edit in revision history.
