Why was the ability to upvote/unupvote comments an unlimited number of times removed?

  • The pop-up that you get when you un-upvote a comment does explain this as well. Commented Oct 26, 2012 at 18:00

It was not removed - it was never allowed. Once you un-upvote a comment, you can not upvote it again.

This was explained when un-upvoting was first introduced.

  • @jbobbins It's a comment vote, not an answer. Comments are disposable, and I wouldn't worry too much about an errant vote.

  • Your saying that may be warranted based on some text you're pointing to, but having read thousands of SE posts and their comments, it's simply not true that "comments are disposable" from a utility standpoint (which in my view is the main purpose of SE) and you (and those that continue the false narrative about all comments apparently being disposable) weaken SE by persisting in that vein. Obviously, some comments ought to be disposable and this should be handled by flagging. But comments can be every bit as useful as the post they are a part of, especially with ever-changing technology.

  • @jbobbins You're right; that statement was a little ridiculous. It was also not necessary as part of a complete answer to this question. I've removed it.
