I am wondering without significant donors and no advertisement policy on any of the Stack Overflow or it's siblings how this big website with large database and many servers is maintained?

I should note also that (1) Stack Overflow is not a non-profit; it is run by Stack Exhange, Inc. and (2) there are advertisements on Stack Overflow. – waiwai933 Dec 14 '12 at 8:12
