This question already has an answer here:

Sometimes, questions get popular and out of hand. They start accumulating answer over answer, typically by low reputation users, typically not saying anything that wasn't said already. Even when you get eight or so actually different ways to grind reputation on Borderlands 2... it's not like you really need more.

I think that protection could be a fair way to put a speed bump on these questions and limit somewhat the amount of answers they get. What do you think?

Currently, questions are automatically protected when a certain number of 1 rep answers is deleted (I think it's three). The usual argument for not establishing a lower threshold for protection is that some guru from Microsoft who's never used the site before might come along with some scintillating tidbit that he can't post because the question is protected. – Robert Harvey Mar 30 '13 at 15:39
  • Very much related, though asking for a higher threshold: Should we automatically protect all questions with more than N answers? – Arjan Mar 30 '13 at 15:43
  • it would be even better to fix the bug in hotness score formula that forces every answer, no matter how crappy, to push question up in the collider which only brings more mindless lemmings willing to answer. Protecting question when collider gone mad is like pissing against the wind; the force is too strong (BTDT) – gnat Mar 30 '13 at 16:33
  • @CamilStaps Just protect exactly once, automatically, as soon as the answer count hits 10. After all, deletion is 10k/20k, protection is 15k. – badp Mar 30 '13 at 17:02

@Arjan I would be okay with this being closed as a duplicate. Things have changed a little from 2010, though. – badp Mar 30 '13 at 17:03
